The Quick Version
I was just reading through comments and realized that not everyone has time to read everything here... duh. So, for a quick update just look over there to the right. --->
I'll always keep a very short version of the latest info there. Sorry about that.

Amacker is quite physically active - often much to the dismay of the nurses trying to attend to her. Changing her sheets, for example, is a challenge when she's thrashing! She has long been able to lift both legs straight up - even in a more sedated state. This morning, she lifted her leg up, looked at it, then said with disappointment, "I wish my leg were more entertaining."
This comment was almost immediately followed by an equally disappointed and frustrated, "I'm sleepy again."
Wonderful idea, Richard! Wonder if there's a way to link to that on personal startpages: "Local Weather. . . Your Stocks. . . Your Team's Scores. . . How's Amacker?"
I had a disturbing realization that today's status describes me most days...
"Breathing on her own / forming short, funny sentence fragments / naps often"
Could Amacker have (or does she already have?) something to play music on?
I'm so sympathetic to her complaint of needing entertainment; sounds like she needs something for her powerful mind to focus on.
Something like an iPod, on random, with speakers, so it can sit out of the way? Books on tape could be good too?
Is there anything she CAN have that we can help her get?
Thank you so very much for all the updates, Richard, and Alden!
hugs,
Kathleen
Richard, you are doing such an amazing job of keeping us all connected, and it's so sweet of you to try to make it even easier, and more entertaining with all the pictures and songs. What's Amacker's name for you, so we can all shout out a resounding YAY [Amacker's probably simultaneously beloved and annoying nickname for her little bro]? And in the meantime, YAY RICHARD!!!
Good question...
I am Richard VI. My son, Richard VII, goes by Boot. My father, Richard V, goes by Dick. I just go by Richard.
When I was young and behaved in a petulant way, my sisters would call me a "Puh." I think that has something to do with me getting really angry one time, and fearing to use a naughty word, my words got caught in my throat. I called the offending older sibling a "puh." Since then they called me that when I'm an ass. <-- see, no more inhibitions about using naughty words.
Kathleen,
She does have an iPod, and I'm working on audio books for her.
I also have a very large collection of movies and TV shows that we'll load up on a display device for her.
Right now she's got a few too many wires going in and out to complicate the situation with electronics, but soon!
If she'd like audiobooks, I have an ass- ton on mp3 cds I can mail you. Is there a dvd player she can use? I have a mini player that I could probably give to Don to give to you and her. Maybe she needs a netflix account?
Re: Puh ... not sure it works for me. How did Boot get that name? It's totally cool! Maybe you can be Boot Sr. Or Senior Boot. heh.

Happy happy happy dance time!!!
I missed two days and didn't know until now that Amacker's not only breathing on her own but *talking*! And feisty!! She's Amacker again!!
I can breath again myself now :)
Richard, I tried writing you several times right after the accident when I was out of town and it kept bouncing back, probably due to my being housed at a university - firewall, likely.
But I want to join in the chorus of *THANK YOU'S* for keeping us all informed. It makes all the difference in the world to those of us who live far away...and to those of us who live close by but still aren't allowed to see her yet ;)
I really really really appreciate your taking the time to not only write stuff down, but to remember all the details to make us feel like we're there.
Or at least not completely helpless and ignorant.
OK, at least not ignorant.
I'm writing her directly (yes, via you and not the hospital) now that she'll be able to understand stupid cards again :)

Well, the name Boot is a story in and of itself! I know that I only became Dick when I was no longer "Little Dick" because my father was "Big Dick"! Maybe Richard (sometimes Rich) is biding his time for the same reason?! But I too have lived by his wonderful, entertaining and informative posts! And tomorrow I get to fly again to Palo Alto to be with my incredible, sometimes difficult but always loved Amacker! I know many of you wait patiently - but not for too much longer I hope. I love you all for loving her! We are all very, very lucky!

Hey! I'm almost reader 25,000! Do I win a visit with Queen Amacker herself?? I guess that will have to wait for a bit, but in case she's reading this, her loyal subjects are clamoring for a wave from the balcony!
Can't wait to see you, girl...
Yay PUH! sounds like something 4.5-year-old Quirin would say. So I'm going to start saying it around the house and seeing how it catches on. Yay PUH!
yes, but puh, where is the picture of you on this blog?? i've requested it in our personal emails and you have skated around it! i'm calling you out. surely shirley, ya got a snap of you and amacker or maybe the threes of you...you are gaining a legion of fans, people have asked me about you. come on now, let them have a lovely face to go with the lovely words.
amacker will be so pleased with all you've created with this site.

What about hooking her up to an iCatheter?
Hey, Puh, we want a picture of you! If the theme of this blog is Amacker (and it is), how about a shot of you and Amcker togther? Adding pics of Dick and Alden would be nice too. We love you all, and some of us have met you all at least enough to shake hands at one time or another ... but memories drift, and i am not sure that i know what a wonderful, supportive Puh actually looks like (if i ever knew) or what family facial traits a smart, clever, family-oriented, and industirous Puh might share with its respective Dick and Amacker and Alden. How about it?
