A Tour of the Hospital

You might have images in your head of what a hospital should look like. Stanford U.M.C is different.

To give you, especially those of you who are far away, an idea of the country club in which Amacker finds herself, I snapped a few pictures this afternoon. You can click the pictures to make them bigger.
There are several fountains around the buildings, and plenty of shady spots to sit and read a book.
Dramatic landscaping helps give ambient light to rooms on every floor.
Flower gardens are well-tended.
The morning Tai Chi classes are well attended. The Stanford Jazz Ensembles and other groups often play in the afternoons.
Three-story windows provide ambient light throughout the hospital. Notice the window cleaner in the lower left of the picture.
Even the cafeteria is lit by a skylight and serves Starbucks coffee and food that is something better than institutional.
And well-behaved children are welcome throughout, but not in the I.C.U. In this case, the well-behaved children are mine.

Country club indeed. I've driven by the establishment, but I had no idea it was quite *that* posh. Somehow, I see Amacker fitting in quite nicely, being waited on hand and foot as she recovers. As everyone else has posted, thank you again for keeping everyone up to speed on her progress. One day I was emailing her about ziplines and a few days later I got a phone call from someone who wasn't even certain if the accident was real. Being able to click a button and see exactly what's going on from day to day is very comforting and reassuring, unlike those first couple of days. Thank you!
Now go do something nice for yourself - you deserve it after all you've been doing for all of us!

RIchard-

You're giving us such a gift by doing this, you know....I"ve been glued to Amacker's page since you started it and I can't thank you enough. To step back and look at the big picture - this is another way the Internet is changing our culture. What did we do without it?

So can we please have a picture of....YOU?

Not only to mention the hospital is beautiful, she is getting some of the most top knotch care in California there. If she was gonna hurt herself this bad, there is not a better hospital she can be in to get better.

Richard,
The hopsital cafeteria food is decent to pretty good; I eat there all the time. If you get tired of it, goto the award winning NEXUS cafeteria (M-F8:30 to 7pm: breakfast, lunch, dinner)at the Clark Center (a 5-10 minute walk away from Hospital) for gourmet, made to order food at reasonable/subsidized prices.
The Clark Center also has a Peets on the top (3rd) floor. Take the stairs in front of the NEXUS cafeteria.

AVOID: the Beckman Bistro in a nearby building which serves "mexican" food. (shudder)

Here is a link to your eatery options on campus, please note that the Netappetit truck (excellent Indian Lunch buffet food) no longer goes to the medical school admin builing(a 5min walk away), but is still at the humanities building(short drive?):

Otherwise, the kids might get a kick outta seeing Momma Duck and her ducklings at the front hospital fountain -- for a limited time only (ducklings growing fast).

take care,
jay
